On Monday, 16th June 2025, Major General Lanka Amarapala RWP RSP ndc psc, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and the Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers, paid a momentous official visit to the revered grounds of the ‘Home of Sappers’ in Mattegoda.
The day commenced with military tradition and pride as the Colonel Commandant was received with a ceremonial Guard Turnout at the Main Entrance, marking the honour and esteem in which he is held. This was followed by a vibrant Guard of Honour at the Parade Ground, symbolizing the deep rooted pride and discipline of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers.
A significant highlight of the visit was the inauguration of a Modern Kitchen Complex at the Sappers’ Leisure Bay — a testament to the continued facilities development being carried out within the Corps. To mark the occasion, Major General Lanka Amarapala also planted a commemorative sapling, signifying growth, resilience, and a greener future.
Subsequently, the Colonel Commandant addressed the troops representing the Engineer Division, 5 Field Engineer Regiment, 14 CBRNE Regiment, and the 16 Workshop Regiment. In his compelling address, he stressed the importance of maintaining discipline, professionalism, and operational readiness at all times. He also issued a firm reminder to all personnel to refrain from illegal and drug related activities, underscoring the importance of upholding the Army’s code of conduct.
He further praised the Sappers for their contributions to national development and institutional excellence, noting the essential technical and engineering support provided in various civil and military infrastructure undertakings. The Colonel Commandant also spoke on the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ national initiative, encouraging active participation from military personnel in making the country cleaner and more sustainable.
A group photograph with Officers captured the spirit of camaraderie and unity, followed by a tea session, during which Major General Lanka Amarapala warmly interacted with all ranks. This informal yet meaningful engagement fostered an environment of mutual respect, openness, and unity among the Sapper family.
Bringing the visit to a close, the Colonel Commandant penned his thoughts and commendations in the Visitors’ Books of the Engineer Division, 5 Field Engineer Regiment, 14 CBRNE Regiment, and 16 Workshop Regiment. He lauded the professionalism, discipline, and commitment of both Officers and Other Ranks in elevating the standards of the ‘Home of Sappers’, leaving a lasting message of inspiration and pride.
