5 (V) SLA TROOPS PREVENTING OVERFLOWING OF THE MAHAWELI RIVER SAFETY DAM IN SURIYAPURA AREA

To reduce the possible flooding situation due to the rising water level of the Mahaweli River flowing towards Trincomalee on the border of the Suriyapura GN Division of 5 (V) Sri Lanka Artillery, a 4.7 km lengthy safety dam has been constructed on the left side of the river.

Furthermore, overflowing of the Mahaweli River due to the heavy rain it has been observed to ensure the safety of 140 families and farmlands in the villages of Suriyapura, Samagipura and Samanalapalama, safety dam of the Mahaweli River should be prevented from overflowing threat part of dam nearly 200 m from the Bogaspitiya area. Accordingly, after inspecting the area by DS Kanthale and staff of irrigation office pointing out that the strengthening of the dam should be done immediately, and after requesting support of the Army troops to do it, and required for that purpose backhoe machine, 2 x tractors and poly bags were provided.

With instructions of the General Officer Commanding, 22 Infantry Division, Major General P A M Peiris RSP USP psc, under the guidance of the Commander, 222 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier H K S Thilakarathna, and close supervision of the Commanding Officer, 5(V) Sri Lanka Artillery, Lieutenant Colonel W M P B Wekadapola USP psc IG, on 02 January 2024, 03 Officers with 32 troops of the Battalion and 24 Civil Security Department troops participated to strengthened and 250 sand bags were place to rebuild the safety of dam.
