RECONSTRUCTION OF HISTORIC ELAHERA ANICUT STRENGTHENED THROUGH MILITARY, CIVILIAN, AND GOVERNMENT COLLABORATION

The Mahaweli Authority, together with the Irrigation Department, has commenced the reconstruction of the ancient Elahera Anicut, which was severely damaged during the recent floods. Built during the reign of King Vasabha (67–111 AD), the Elahera Anicut is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most remarkable hydraulic engineering achievements. For centuries, it has diverted water from the Mahaweli River into the Elahera, Minneriya, Giritale irrigation network, supporting thousands of acres of paddy cultivation and sustaining the livelihoods of farming communities in the Elahera and Polonnaruwa regions.

Recognizing the national importance of restoring this vital irrigation structure, the Commander, Security Forces (East), Major General J.S.B.W. Pallekumbura RWP RSP ndu psc, took the initiative to expedite reconstruction efforts. Under his leadership, the Sri Lanka Army deployed troops from the 16 SLNG (2 × 50), along with Army Engineer troops equipped with essential machinery to support the technical restoration work. An Army medical team has also been mobilized to ensure the health and safety of all personnel and civilians engaged in the project.

Army troops will continue to support the reconstruction efforts until the anicut is fully restored to operational condition.

Civilian communities in the surrounding areas are actively contributing through manual labour, debris clearing, and logistical support, demonstrating strong civil–military cooperation in restoring this historically and agriculturally significant structure.

Thereafter, the Commander, Security Forces (East), together with the General Officer Commanding 23 Infantry Division, the Commander 231 Infantry Brigade, and the Government Agent of Polonnaruwa, visited the damaged villages to inspect the situation, observe the ongoing progress, and encourage all teams involved.
