RESTORING FLOOD-DAMAGED ROADS: MILITARY EXPERTISE FOR CIVILIAN RESILIENCE

Flooding occurred in Kiran, Pulipanchikal area due to the rapid rise in the water level of Maduru Oya and Valachchenai Aaru due to the heavy rains prevailing in the Batticaloa district. The road running from Kiran through Pulipanchikal to Wadumune, Kudimbimale, Toppigala and Periyavadwan was submerged in water at several places for a period of almost two weeks with a level of 5-7 feet. As a result, the people of many villages belonging to the Koralepattu South Divisional Secretariat were in dire straits.

As soon as the heavy rain subsided, the water level in Maduru Oya and Valachchenai Aaru returned to normal. Accordingly, the flooded areas also returned to normal. The road leading from Kiran to Kudumbimale, Toppigala and Periyavadwan through Pulipanchikal was damaged at several places due to flooding. It became impossible to move any vehicles.

Therefore, to mitigate the situation, on the instructions of General Officer Commanding of 23 Infantry Division Major General KVNP Premaratne RSP USP psc, and close supervision of Commander 232 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier KA Pushpa Kumara RWP RSP USP psc, 232 Infantry Brigade troops, and 12 SLNG troops were repaired the road and restored the transport facilities on 26 December 2023.
