THREE-DAY WORKSHOP ON PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION CONCLUDES AT SECURITY FORCES HEADQUARTERS (EAST)

A comprehensive three-day workshop on “Psychological Health and Prevention of Suicide Attempts among Members of the Armed Forces” was successfully conducted at the Security Forces Headquarters (East) from 21 to 23 October 2025. The programme was held under the guidance and direction of Major General JSBW Pallekumbura RWP RSP ndu psc, Commander Security Forces (East).

The workshop was conducted by a team of mental health specialists from the Directorate of Preventive Medicine and Mental Health, Army Headquarters, comprising Brigadier (Consultant) RMM Monaragala USP, Brigadier (Counselor) MKAD Chandramal, and Dr. Maj DWSMK Silva.

The primary objective of the programme was to enhance awareness, understanding, and capacity among officers and senior non-commissioned officers in identifying, managing, and preventing psychological health challenges within the military environment. Special emphasis was placed on the early recognition of stress-related conditions and the implementation of preventive measures to mitigate the risk of self-harm and suicide.

A total of 60 senior officers and 65 senior SNCOs representing various formations within the Security Forces (East) theatre attended the workshop. The interactive sessions included lectures, group discussions, and case studies designed to strengthen the participants’ ability to provide effective leadership and support to subordinates facing mental health difficulties.

In his closing remarks, Major General JSBW Pallekumbura RWP RSP ndu psc commended the initiative of the Directorate of Preventive Medicine and Mental Health for their dedicated efforts in promoting psychological well-being among service personnel. He emphasized the importance of sustained awareness and institutional support to ensure the mental resilience and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces.
