Thousands of civilians of Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic faiths attracted the Vesak Zone at Sewanapitiya, Welikanda area organized on a grand scale by 23 Division of Security Force Headquarters (East) in partnership with Welikanda Sasanarakshaka Balamandalaya and Divisional Secretariat Welikanda.
To commemorate Buddha’s Birth, Enlightenment and Salvation (Nirvana), the colourful and glittering spectacle was organized on a conceptual notion of the Chief Incumbent of Sama Viharaya Sewanapitiya, Venerable Susirigama Sangharakkitha Thero, General Officer Commanding 23 Division, Brigadier Chula Abenayake and under the close supervision of Commander Security Force (East) Major General Santhusitha Pananwala. Accordingly, a series of events including an exhibition of Vesak lanterns with the elegant craftsmanship of the troops of SFHQ (East), 23 Division, 231 Brigade, 232 Brigade, 233 Brigade, ATS Maduruoya, 11 SLA, 4 GW, 6 GR, 10 GR, 12(V) SLA, 17(V) SLLI, 11(V) SLSR, 12 SLNG and 18 SLNG, singing devotional songs (Bhakthi Gee) by school children was arranged with an eye of revering the virtues of Lord Buddha.
Dansela (free eating place) put up at the premises, served thousands of civilians with hot meals. Police Station Welikanda in combination with Civil Security Department Rideethanna, the Headquarters 23 Division and Trade Union Sewanapitiya respectively organized the free eateries during the three days commencing from 29 April to coincide with this commemorative event.
Representing Security Force Headquarters (East), Commander FMA (East) Major General Manoj Mudannayake attended as the Chief Guest at the inaugural opening ceremony on the second day (30 April) of the event.
