WILDFIRE IN "SOMAWATHIYA" NATIONAL PARK BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL

More than 50 Army troops took prompt action to arrest the spread of a wildfire in the Somawathiya National Park on Thursday (19) after the matter was brought to the notice of the Security Force (East)..

Major General Santhusitha Pananwala, Commander, Security Force - East on being informed of the possible spread it to the entire national park, took necessary steps to bring its spread under control within a few hours since the area is very much of a tourist attraction. 7 SLA and 9 SLA troops doused wildfire with short notice. .

The reason for this outbreak is attributed to the prevailing dry weather in the affected area..
