Major General W A N M Weerasinghe RSP USP ndc was born on 19th January 1965 at Kurunegala, Sri Lanka, to a family of five. He studied at Maliyadeva College, Kuranegala. Having completed the Advanced Level Education, he joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 30th October 1985. During his school days he held many appointments in the religious and social activities and especially represented the school/District level cricket, soccer, rugby football, martial arts teams.

After following a short training programme at the Kotalawala Defense University and Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he followed the basic Officer Cadet Course at Officers Training School, Mangla in Pakistan. Subsequently he was commissioned on 24thJune 1986 and given an opportunity to follow a Young Officers’ Course at Quetta, Pakistan. Having joined the 5 Field Engineer Regiment, the corps of Engineers of Sri Lanka Army, he held all the important appointments in the Battalion and commanded the 9 Field (RFT) Engineer Regiment in 2005/2006. From year 2000 to 2003 he was seconded to a government ministry and served as a Regional Director (central province) of the National youth Corps. Subsequently he commanded the 12 Infantry Division and served as Public Relation Officer to Secretory of Defence/ Deputy Military Liaison Officer at the MOD.

He followed many overseas courses such as the Engineers Young Officers’ Course, Engineer Officers Combat Engineer Instructor course and Higher Defense Orientation Course in India, Mid-Career course in Pakistan. Unite Command & Staff course in Bangladesh, International/Regional course on Assistance and Protection against Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Weapons in Republic of Korea/India/Pakistan and Qatar. Also he Qualified in Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Humanitarian Demining, Post Blast Investigations and Qualified in National Defence Course- Bangladesh. Presently he is following Msc on Disaster Management, Mitigation and Analysis in University of Colombo Sri Lanka.

He is decorated with a gallantry award Rana Soora Padakkama (RSP), Uttama Seva padakkama (USP), few service commendations and medals.

He is married to Mrs Sara Weerasinghe and blessed with two daughters.
