In line with the Government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” project and under the direction and instructions of the General Officer Commanding 54 Infantry Division, a tree planting campaign was organized at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu on 14 July 2025. The event aimed to educate society on the importance of protecting trees, highlighting their benefits and the role they play in addressing environmental issues. It also supported the social and environmental objectives of the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative.
This official event was graced by the presence of the Bishop of the Diocese of Mannar, Most Rev. Dr. A. Gnanaprakasam, the District Secretary of Mannar, Mr. K. Kanakeshwaran, the General Officer Commanding 54 Infantry Division Major General A M C Abeykoon RWP RSP USP ndu, Commander 542 Infantry Brigade Brigadier A R W C Asurasingha RWP RSP USP, the Divisional Secretary of Madhu Mr. K Bede Nijaharan and the Range Forest Officer of Madhu Mr. W M M M Weerakoon and other participants. As part of this campaign, 500 selected tree saplings were allocated, and 100 of them were planted during this event as the first phase of the project.
Tree planting campaign was successful under the close supervision of Commander 542 Infantry Brigade and Commanding Officer 4 Gajaba Infantry Regiment and troops actively participated for the event and event was coordinated by Civil Affairs Officer 542 Infantry Brigade.
