Demonstrating its steadfast commitment to national reconciliation, cultural integration, and community outreach, the 59 Infantry Division of the Sri Lanka Army successfully organised the “Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival and Musical Fiesta – 2025” on 19 April at the Pradeshiya Sabha Grounds, Mullaitivu.

The event was held with the guidance and leadership of Major General D R N Hettiarachchi RWP RSP USP, General Officer Commanding, 59 Infantry Division. The success of the event was made possible through the invaluable contributions of Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, under-command troops, and the active cooperation of various government organisations.

Adding prestige and inspiration to the proceedings, Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc, Commander Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni), along with Mrs G A Kulatunga, attended the event as the Chief Guest. His presence underscored the significance of fostering lasting peace and unity in the region through meaningful civil military engagement.

The festival attracted a large and diverse gathering, including Sinhala, Tamil, and Muslim civilians from across the Mullaitivu District, along with military personnel from the Division and its subordinate units. This multi ethnic participation powerfully symbolised the Army’s continued dedication to strengthening bonds among communities and promoting peaceful coexistence in post conflict areas.

The day was filled with vibrant traditional games and cultural showcases such as raban playing, pillow fights, tug-of-war, grease pole climbing, the crowning of the New Year Prince and Princess, traditional dance acts, and other performances that reflected the region’s rich multicultural heritage.

The evening concluded with a high-energy Musical Fiesta, featuring captivating performances by the renowned “AGNEE” musical group, alongside talented military and civilian artists. The event was generously sponsored by Wasana Bakers, Horana, whose support significantly uplifted the festive spirit and overall execution of the celebration.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival – 2025 not only celebrated Sri Lanka’s cultural diversity but also served as a strategic platform to reinforce mutual trust between the Army and local communities.
