The Vavuniya District Vesak Zone 2026, jointly organized by the Vavuniya District Secretariat, military establishments, and the Police, was successfully held on 30 and 31 May 2026 as part of the annual Vesak celebrations in the district.
The event brought together formations and establishments under the Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni), including Infantry Divisions, Brigade Headquarters, military units, the Air Force Base Vavuniya, and the Vavuniya Police. The Vesak Zone was organized to commemorate Vesak, marking the Birth, Enlightenment, and Parinirvana of Lord Buddha, while promoting religious harmony, cultural appreciation, and community engagement.
Demonstrating creativity, teamwork, and devotion to Buddhist traditions, 8 Field Engineer Regiment, Sri Lanka Corps of Engineers, proudly secured the Runner-Up Position in the Vesak Lantern Competition conducted as part of the Vesak Zone.
The regiment’s lantern stood out for its innovative design, rich cultural symbolism, and exceptional craftsmanship. Notably, it was constructed entirely from recycled and waste materials, reflecting both environmental responsibility and creative excellence. The impressive display received high appreciation from the judging panel and visitors for its aesthetic appeal and meaningful message.
This achievement highlighted the regiment’s technical expertise, dedication, and strong spirit of teamwork while reaffirming its commitment to promoting harmony, peace, and environmental consciousness. The event also provided an excellent platform to strengthen cooperation and camaraderie among military, police, and civil institutions within the Vavuniya District.
The successful participation of 8 Field Engineer Regiment further demonstrated the unit’s continued contribution to community-oriented initiatives and the preservation of cultural and religious values.
