ARMY MOBILIZES RAPID RESPONSE TEAM TO REPAIR BREACHED SEKKADIPILAWA TANK

The Sekkadipilawa Tank, situated in the 217B Sekkadipilawa Grama Seva Division of the Vavuniya Divisional Secretariat, suffered a significant breach near the sluice gate due to heavy rains brought by Cyclone Ditva. The situation posed an immediate threat to nearly 500 farming families who rely on the tank for their livelihood. Responding swiftly to this disaster, Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc, Commander Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), directed the operation, which was conducted under the supervision of Major General S A U A Solangaarachchi RSP ndc psc, General Officer Commanding 56 Infantry Division.

Acting on the timely instructions of Commander 562 Brigade, restoration efforts commenced under the direct supervision of the Commanding Officer of the 17 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry. On 04 December 2025, a 10-member team from the battalion, together with support from local residents, commenced the coordinated renovation of the embankment. The work focused on stabilizing the breached section and preventing further expansion of the damage caused by the heavy rainfall.

The troops worked efficiently, employing sandbags and improvised engineering methods to reinforce the weakened structure. Their prompt and disciplined intervention ensured the protection of vital water resources and the safety of the nearby communities. This swift military response not only averted the risk of a larger disaster but also underscored the Sri Lanka Army’s steadfast commitment to community welfare and effective disaster management.
