ARMY TROOPS INTERVENE TO RESTORE CYCLONE-DAMAGED PERIYAPULIYALANKULAM TANK

Cyclone Ditva caused severe flooding in several areas under Vengalasettikulam Divisional Secretariat. Among the affected infrastructure facilities was the Periyapuliyankulam tank in Periyapuliyankulam Grama Seva Division, where about 10 meters of its dam had been severely breached. This structural failure posed an immediate and serious threat to over 600 families dependent on agriculture.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc, Commander Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) issued directives to initiate rapid restoration efforts. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Major General S A U A Solangaarachchi RSP ndc psc, General Officer Commanding 56 Infantry Division. Further instructions from the Commander 562 Brigade ensured that the mission was executed with precision and proper coordination.

Under the direct supervision of the Commanding Officer of the 17 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry, 01 x 20 troops was deployed on 06 December 2025 to carry out the restoration of the breached embankment. The troops worked diligently to reinforce the damaged section, prevent further erosion, and restore the stability of the tank. Their swift and disciplined intervention not only safeguarded vital water resources but also reaffirmed the Army’s steadfast commitment to supporting affected communities during natural disasters.
