In a rapid response to prevent a potential disaster, troops of the 17 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry successfully restored the Perukankulam Tank in the Pampaimadu area after its embankment partially collapsed. The operation was launched under the close supervision of Major General S A U A Solangaarachchi RSP ndc psc, General Officer Commanding 56 Infantry Division, and carried out in accordance with the guidance of Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc, Commander Security Force Headquarters (Wanni).
Acting on the timely instructions of Brigadier D M P U Dissanayake RSP USP IG, Commander of the 562 Brigade, and under the direct supervision of the Commanding Officer of the 17 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry, the reconstruction work on the tank embankment was promptly and meticulously initiated. Recognizing the immediate risk posed by the breach, A 01 x 10 troops of the battalion was swiftly mobilized to stabilize the embankment and prevent the damage from expanding further.
The troops worked efficiently using sandbags and improvised engineering techniques to reinforce the damaged section, ensuring the safety of nearby communities and protecting vital water resources. Their prompt action not only averted a possible large-scale disaster but also demonstrated the Army’s unwavering commitment to community welfare and disaster response.
