Series of Devotional Programmes Conducted by 59 Infantry Division for Upcoming Vesak Festival — Donation of Spectacles, Essential Items for Pregnant Mothers, and Diabetes Screening

Under the esteemed leadership and guidance of the General Officer Commanding of the 59 Infantry Division, Major General D R N Hettiarachchi RWP RSP USP, a series of spiritually enriching and socially impactful events were successfully organized in celebration of Vesak Poya Day. These programmes were aimed at fostering civil-military cooperation and community welfare in the Mullaitivu District.

As part of the celebrations, the 59 Infantry Division organized several humanitarian initiatives, including:

• Distribution of Essential Items to Expectant Mothers: In conjunction with World Mother’s Day, essential items were distributed to 250 pregnant mothers, offering much-needed support to women in the region.

• Diabetes Screening Camp: A free diabetes screening programme was conducted for 280 civilians, providing early detection and awareness on managing the disease.

• Donation of Spectacles through Eye Clinic: In collaboration with Lions Clubs International – District 306 C1, Kolonnawa, the division conducted an ophthalmic (eye) clinic on 11 May 2025, benefiting over 300 visually impaired civilians in Mullaitivu. During this event, spectacles were distributed to selected individuals following on-site examinations conducted by a team of consultant ophthalmologists from the Lions Eye Hospital.

The events saw the active participation of local civilians and military personnel, strengthening the bonds between the Sri Lanka Army and the communities they serve. Major General D R N Hettiarachchi RWP RSP USP, the General Officer Commanding of the 59 Infantry Division, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Senior Officers, Officers, and Other Ranks of the division.

These initiatives reflect the Sri Lanka Army's commitment to social responsibility and the well-being of the people in the Northern Province, while also honoring the spiritual significance of Vesak.
