The Vavuniya Vesak Zone, held annually under the patronage of the Incumbent of the Vavuniya Bodhi Dakshinarama Temple, once again came to life with the dedicated support of the Security Forces (Wanni). This year’s event was conducted under the guidance of Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc, Commander, Security Forces (Wanni), in collaboration with the Vavuniya District Secretariat. The grand celebration commenced on the Vesak Full Moon Day, 12 May 2025.
A vibrant Vesak Lantern Display marked the occasion, beginning at the main entrance of the Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) and extending along both sides of the A9 road to the Vavuniya Bodhi Dakshinarama Temple. These stunning lanterns were crafted and presented by the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Police, Police Special Task Force and the Department of Civil Defence, creating a dazzling spiritual atmosphere.
On the opening day, a herbal drink dansala (refreshment stall) was organized by the Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), offering refreshments to the many devotees who came to witness the event.
As part of the celebrations, the Vavuniya Bodhi Dakshinarama Temple hosted a moving devotional music program. Children from Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim schools in the Vavuniya area performed Buddhist hymns in Sinhala and Tamil, promoting a message of peace, unity, and interfaith harmony.
In another highlight, the Maha Bath Dansala (grand rice almsgiving) was organized by the Department of Civil Defence with the active participation of the Vavuniya District Secretariat, Divitional secretariats, the Young Buddhist Association, local temple donor councils, and the Vavuniya City Trade Association.
The 2025 Vavuniya Vesak Zone was once again a testament to the collective efforts of the community and security forces in fostering cultural unity and religious devotion.
