In celebration of the sacred Vesak Festival, the troops of the 54 Infantry Division organized a highly successful Manioc Dansala (free eatery) on 30 May 2026 at Thaladi Junction. Launched with the noble intention of sharing the blessings and compassionate spirit of Vesak, the initiative offered freshly prepared food to the public, embodying the timeless virtue of giving.
The event was conceived and smoothly executed by all ranks of the Division under the direct guidance and supervision of the General Officer Commanding, Major General G S K Perera RSP ndc. His mentorship and steady leadership provided a firm foundation for the initiative’s success; as the old proverb reminds us, a house divided cannot stand, and here, unity of purpose ensured a strong and coordinated effort. From early morning hours until noon, a steady stream of civilians from the surrounding communities visited the Dansala to partake of the military’s hospitality and warm fare.
Leadership from across the Division attended and supported the effort, demonstrating solidarity and esprit of troops. The Commander of the 541 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier W S A B Dharmaratne RSP USP psc IG, 543 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier A H R Hasantha RSP psc, the Colonel General Staff of the 54 Infantry Division, and all staff were present, showcasing the close relationship between command and troops. The Dansala not only celebrated the religious and cultural significance of Vesak but also served to strengthen bonds of goodwill, trust, and harmony between the armed forces and the local civilian community, proving that charity begins at home and that many hands make light work.
A heartfelt and special note of appreciation is extended to S/R100525 Corporal Gunasekara P K M N of the Divisional Headquarters. Demonstrating exceptional generosity and personal commitment, Corporal Nisansala donated 500 kilograms of manioc for the Dansala in memory of her late father, Mr. P K Gunasekara. Her selfless contribution exemplifies the true virtues of giving and camaraderie that define the Vesak season. As the proverb goes, charity is the parent of peace; her act will be fondly remembered by all who benefited.
Events such as this Manioc Dansala reinforce the military’s role as a partner in community welfare and cultural observance. By sharing food and fellowship on Vesak, the 54 Infantry Division illustrated that compassion, respect, and mutual support transcend institutional boundaries. May this spirit of generosity continue to flourish; after all, what we give returns to us a hundredfold.
