“HUSMEN - HUSMAK VIRU THURU SEWANA” TREE PLANTING PROGRAMME COMMENCES IN MANNAR

The Sri Lanka Army launched the island-wide tree planting initiative titled “HUSMEN - HUSMAK VIRU THURU SEWANA” as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental restoration, ecological sustainability, and national remembrance. The programme has been introduced in tribute to the war heroes who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation, as well as the innocent civilians who lost their lives during the devastating “Ditwah” cyclone disaster. Through this initiative, efforts are being made to restore the environmental damage caused by the disaster while promoting environmental awareness and responsibility among future generations across the country.

The inaugural programme for the Mannar District was successfully conducted on 25 May 2026 at the sacred premises of the Madhu Shrine under the guidance and instructions of the General Officer Commanding of the 54 Infantry Division. The event commenced with multi-religious observances, symbolising unity, harmony, and blessings for the noble initiative.

Religious blessings were invoked by the Chief Incumbent of Madhu Bodhi Raja Viharaya, Ven. Kosgoda Sri Rathanasheeli Thero, Thavaseelam Kurukkal of Palampiddi Amman Kovil, Rev. Fr. Peppei Susei of Madhu Church, and Mohamad Musni Maulavi of SP Potkeny Mosque, Nanattan.

The occasion was attended by the General Officer Commanding of the 54 Infantry Division, Major General G S K Perera RSP ndu, the Commander of the 542 Infantry Brigade, Colonel L W Ridimahaliyadda USP IG, the Divisional Secretary of Madhu, Mr. R P Amalraj, the Assistant Superintendent of Police – Mannar, Mr. M Abeysinghe, officers of the Madhu Wildlife Office, local residents, and close family members of the four individuals who tragically lost their lives during the “Ditwah” cyclone disaster. Their presence reflected a shared sense of grief, remembrance, solidarity, and responsibility that surrounded the programme.

The tree planting campaign conveyed a profound message of environmental conservation, collective responsibility, and national unity. By planting trees in memory of the fallen and for the well-being of future generations, participants took a meaningful step towards creating a greener, safer, and more resilient environment. The programme stood as a solemn reminder that remembrance and renewal can be united in one noble national endeavour dedicated to building a stronger and more sustainable future for the nation.
