Demonstrating its steadfast commitment to national reconciliation, cultural integration, and community outreach, the 59 Infantry Division of the Sri Lanka Army successfully organized a “Vesak Lantern Zone with Rice and Ice Cream Dansala” on the 12 and 13 of May 2025 at the Pudukkudirippu Municipal Council Grounds. The event catered to over 15,000 civilians in the area.
The entire program was conducted under the guidance and leadership of Major General D R N Hettiarachchi RWP RSP USP, General Officer Commanding, 59 Infantry Division. The event's success was made possible through the invaluable contributions of the Brigade Commanders of the 591, 592, and 593 Infantry Brigades, Commanding Officers of the under-command Infantry Battalions, and the dedicated efforts of their troops, with strong logistical support from support battalions stationed in the Mullaitivu area.
Adding prestige and inspiration to the proceedings, Major General K M P S B Kulathunga RSP ndc psc, Commander, Security Forces (Wanni), attended the event as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Mrs. G A Kulathunga. His presence highlighted the importance of fostering lasting peace and unity in the region through meaningful civil-military engagement.
The Vesak Zone drew a large and diverse crowd, including Buddhist, Hindu, and Christian civilians from the division’s area of responsibility. This multi-religious participation symbolized the Army’s continued dedication to strengthening bonds among communities and promoting peaceful coexistence in post-conflict regions.
The 2025 Vesak Zone, organized by the 59 Infantry Division, served not only as a celebration of a significant religious event but also as a strategic platform to reinforce mutual trust and goodwill between the Sri Lanka Army and local communities.
