The 561 Infantry Brigade commemorated its 16th Anniversary on 07 December 2025 under the guidance of the Commander, 561 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier E G C Gunasena RWP RSP psc. The anniversary programme comprised a series of religious, ceremonial, sporting, and appreciation activities, reflecting the Brigade’s proud traditions, operational readiness, and strong bonds with both service personnel and the civil community.
The celebrations commenced on 04 December 2025 with a Bodhi Puja, invoking blessings upon the Brigade and paying solemn tribute to the fallen War Heroes who made the supreme sacrifice in service to the Brigade and the Sri Lanka Army. On 07 December 2025, a Guard Turnout was conducted in accordance with time-honoured Army customs and discipline. This was followed by a sapling-planting ceremony, symbolizing the Brigade’s enduring commitment to environmental conservation within its Area of Responsibility.
Prior to the Troops Address, a two-minute silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives during the recent disaster situation, reflecting the Brigade’s compassion and solidarity with the nation. Addressing the gathering, the Commander commended all ranks for their dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to upholding military discipline and honour.
Subsequently, trophies were awarded to the champions and runners-up of the Inter-Unit Volleyball and Cricket Tournaments, organized to enhance morale, teamwork, and unit cohesion among the troops. In recognition of their invaluable contributions, civil servants were also presented with gift packs in appreciation of their quiet yet tireless support in administrative and community-related duties.
An All Ranks Lunch marked the conclusion of the anniversary programme, fostering camaraderie and unity among Officers and Other Ranks. Established on 08 December 2009 in the aftermath of the Humanitarian Operation, the 561 Infantry Brigade, under the 56 Infantry Division, has been commanded by 13 Commanders to date, with the present Commander continuing its proud legacy. The 16th Anniversary stands as a testament to the Brigade’s unwavering service, unity, and enduring commitment to the nation.
