A softball cricket tournament was successfully conducted at the Palinagar Public Ground on 04 February 2026 from 1500 hrs onwards, in conjunction with the 78th National Independence Day celebrations. The event was organized with the participation of the Palinagar Youth Club (Skylab Sports Club) with the primary objective of strengthening civil–military cooperation and fostering goodwill among the local Tamil community. The programme also aimed at promoting unity, mutual respect, and positive social interaction between the security forces and civilians in the area.
The tournament was conducted under the instructions of the Commander, 561 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier E G C Gunasena RWP RSP psc, and under the supervision of the Commanding Officer of the 10th Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Lieutenant Colonel J A B Deniyage RWP RSP USP SLLI, with the guidance of the Second-in-Command, Major U.C.M. Premakumara RWP psc SLLI. A total of 4 x 20 troops and 30 civilians, including members of the Skylab Sports Club and local villagers, actively participated in the event, demonstrating strong enthusiasm, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The friendly matches provided an effective platform for troops and civilians to interact in a positive and constructive manner.
During the match, the Palinagar Skylab Sports Club won the toss and elected to bat first. At the end of 10 overs, they scored 107 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. In reply, the 10 SLLI team scored 94 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their allotted 10 overs. Accordingly, the Palinagar Skylab Sports Club won the match by 13 runs. Refreshments were organized and provided to the participating teams and spectators by the 10th Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, adding further value to the occasion.
The programme significantly contributed towards enhancing mutual understanding, trust, and harmony between the security forces and the local Tamil community. Such sporting initiatives continue to serve as effective confidence-building measures, promoting reconciliation, lasting relationships, and national integration while strengthening community partnership.
