In parallel with the 78th Independence Day celebrations, a non - biodegradable waste removal programme was conducted at thevampiddi beach, located in the mn - 02 thevampiddi grama niladhari division, on 06 February 2026.
The programme was carried out in accordance with the guidance of the General Officer Commanding of the 54 Infantry Division, Major General A M C Abeykoon RWP RSP USP ndc, and under the direction of the commander of the 541 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier I P Jayasinghe RWP. The initiative was conducted under the supervision of the Commanding Officer of the 5 (V) mechanized infantry regiment, Lieutenant Colonel J P U Kumara USP.
The activity was organized with the objectives of protecting marine and coastal systems, minimizing environmental pollution, and promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. Officers and other ranks of the 5 (V) Mechanized Infantry regiment actively participated in the programme together with local civilians, successfully removing non - biodegradable waste from the thevampiddi coastal area.
