SRI LANKA ARMY CONDUCTS RELIEF OPERATIONS IN FLOOD-AFFECTED GALLE DISTRICT

In response to heavy rainfall on 21st and 22nd November 2025 in the central hills and river basins, the Sri Lanka Army has initiated relief operations for communities affected by subsequent flooding in the lower Gin Ganga valley.

The incident, which caused minor flooding in Neluwa and the surrounding areas of the Galle District, necessitated immediate military assistance. Under the full supervision of the General Officer Commanding of the 61 Infantry Division and the direct command of the Commander of the 573 Infantry Brigade, troops have been deployed to manage the situation.

Key interventions led by the Commanding Officer of the 20 Sri Lanka Light Infantry include:

• The successful evacuation of 197 individuals from high-risk areas to safer locations.

• The safe relocation of 62 students displaced by the floods to their G.C.E. Advanced Level examination centres, ensuring they could sit for their crucial exams without disruption.

Relief operations in the area are ongoing, demonstrating the Army's commitment to acting as a first responder and supporting civilian authorities during natural disasters.
