Under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Disaster Management Center (DMC) conducted a 'Tsunami Preparedness" workshop, including theoretically as well as practically (mock drills), for schools and residents with high tsunami risk near the coastal belt areas in Galle on 24 March 2023 at Anuladevi Girls' School, Magalla.
In line with the aforesaid programme, as requested by the Disaster Management Center, Army personnel from 61 Infantry Division, including the Civil Affairs Officer of 61 Infantry Division and the Commanding Officer of 14 (V) Battalion Gemunu Watch, contributed their assistance to the launch of this important workshop, under the guidance of the Commander Security Forces (West) and General Officer Commanding 61 Infantry Division.
The Assistant Director of the District Disaster Management Coordinating Unit (DDMCU), District Secratariat, Galle, government officials, around 1800 students, school staff, parents and local residents participated in this awareness programme.
Further, in the recent past, the same workshop was also conducted on 01 and 03 March 2023 with the participation of around 1000 students at Kumara Kashyapa Kanishta Vidyalaya, Madampagama and Madampa Maha Vidyalaya, Madampagama by the Disaster Management Center together with Army personnel from the 61 Infantry Division.
