The sacred Vesak festival was celebrated with deep reverence and grandeur at the historic Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo, where thousands gathered to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha.
A key highlight of the celebration was the Perahera organized for the movement of the Sacred Relics from Gangaramaya Temple to Seemamalakaya, an event carried out with immense spiritual significance. The Perahera was gracefully led by the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army Major General W W W M C B Wickramasingha RWP RSP ndu psc, symbolizing the honored partnership between the nation’s spiritual and defense communities.
Adding to the spirit of Vesak, a Bath Dansala was held to offer alms to the devotees and the public. This meritorious act was organized through the dedicated contributions of troops from the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, with the support from civil collaborators.
The Dansala provided warm, nourishing meals to countless visitors who came to pay homage during Vesak, embodying the true values of compassion, charity, and community that this sacred festival upholds.
The combined efforts of the Sri Lanka Army and the civilian community not only ensured the success of the Vesak celebrations but also reinforced the importance of unity, selflessness, and cultural preservation.
Gangaramaya Temple continues to stand as a beacon of Sri Lankan Buddhist heritage, and this year’s Vesak celebration, enriched by both religious and national service contributions, was a shining example of collective harmony and faith in action.
