SLAOC CELEBRATES SINHALA AND TAMIL NEW YEAR WITH TRADITIONAL FESTIVITIES

The Regimental Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (SLAOC), in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps Seva Vanitha Branch (SLAOC–SVB), ceremonially marked the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with a traditional festival held on 27 April 2025 at the SLAOC Rugger Ground.

Major General EMM Fernando Hdmc Lsc AATO, Commander Logistics Command (Army Headquarters) and Colonel Commandant of the SLAOC, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by Mrs Iresha Fernando, Chairperson of the SLAOC–SVB. In keeping with Sinhala cultural customs, 'Arachchi' and his family, accorded a traditional welcome by offering of a sheaf of betel leaves.

The formal commencement of the event was signified by the hoisting of the National Flag by the Colonel Commandant, followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, symbolizing prosperity and unity.

The festival encompassed a vibrant array of traditional games and cultural performances, reflecting the rich heritage of the nation. Attractions such as the recreated village settings — including the Gemi Gedara (village house), Kada Mandiya (village boutique), Ra Mandiya (toddy tavern), Weda Gedara (traditional healer's house), and Kamatha (threshing floor) added authenticity and educational value to the event.

Concluding the celebrations, Major General EMM Fernando and Mrs Iresha Fernando, along with other senior military dignitaries including the council members and commanding officers accompanied by their spouses presented awards and trophies to the winners of various competitions held during the festival.

The event underscored the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps’ commitment to upholding cultural values and fostering camaraderie among its personnel and their families.

The event was attended by a large gathering of Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks, civil staff members, and their families.
